Uncovering narratives of Black whalers, sailors, and captains who shaped maritime history. This piece pays homage to the story of William T. Shorey who was a remarkable Black captain and whaler who not only navigated treacherous seas but helped others find their path to freedom. He integrated his crew during the height of Jim Crow and became respected by all creeds and races as a captain.
