WATER CARRIES WHAT WE CANNOT
Acrylic, raffia and silkworm cocoons on wood panel
12in x 12in
2025
This piece honors the long lineage of Black maritime movement and those who traveled, labored, voyaged, and held memories along the water’s edge. The raffia fibers are the tides in motion that echo the hidden Black maritime stories of Black captains, and seafarers carried across oceans. The cluster of barnacles up top are symbols of ancestral navigation, spiritual wealth, and protection. A still life of currents rather than objects, this piece speaks to oceanic rituals.
