What Tasanee Art is All About
Heals. Every painting starts with something I had to survive. Salt embedded in wet paint. Raffia pressed into linen. Materials that hold memory. When someone stands in front of one of these works and goes quiet, I know they found themselves in it.
Connects. My work lives inside stories that aren't always told out loud — Black women carrying weight, immigrants holding two worlds, people learning to love themselves again. These paintings say: your story was worth painting.
Empowers. When you bring one of these works home, you're not hanging art on your wall. You're hanging evidence. That you existed. That you survived. That you belong in a room this beautiful.

This piece is about what it means to be rooted in simplicity while carrying the full complexity of your soul. Both things can be true. You can be grounded and elaborate, fundamental and wild. That duality is not a contradiction — it is the whole point of authentic self-expression.

She is an Afro-indigenous ancestor enveloped in her natural element. Her Fulani braids, adorned in cowrie shells, frame her face. Atop her head sit sacred Duafe combs — symbols of the ancient rites and protective powers of womanhood, passed down through generations. She carries both the wisdom of ancestors and the fullness of her own femininity. This piece grants permission to honor all of it.

There is a quiet labor to listening — to the body, to ancestry, to truths that were never given language. When we listen internally, we gain patience and devotion, and we learn to hold space for what has been passed down without explanation. This piece asks us to honor what we intuitively know, even when words were absent.

Swimming and water were never freely given to Black people. They were controlled, delayed, and in many cases withheld entirely. The hanging fibers and shell-like details in this piece echo hair, shorelines, and things shaped by time and touch. Water appears here not as leisure but as a place where permission, safety, and rest had to be negotiated. This is part of the Black Maritime Collection.

About Tasanee
I'm Tasanee Durrett, a painter and licensed architect based in Orlando, Florida. My work is rooted in African diasporic heritage and the inner lives of Black women. I've shown in private and public institutions like the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, Mennello Museum and the Mint Museum (to name a few!), painted a public mural commissioned by the City of Orlando and Bloomberg Philanthropies, and I'm a Goldman Sachs 1 Million Black Women fellow.
But none of that is why I paint.
